An der Staffelei höre ich klassische Musik. Lange war es immer wieder die 6. Sinfonie von Beethoven — die Pastorale. Eines Tages überlegt ich, ob man Musik malen kann, zumal sie so lautmalerisch ist: die bukolische Landschaft, die Glöckchen der Pferde, das aufziehende Gewitter, das sich entlädt.
Ich bereitete eine Leinwand vor, das fertige Bild fast schon vor Augen, und begann mit dem Spachtel in schnellem Tempo, die Musik hörend. Nach drei Stunden war das Gemälde fertig, durchaus zu meiner Zufriedenheit.
Ob je ein Maler Musik in Bild gesetzt hat, ich weiß es nicht - kurze Zeit später entstanden „Die vier Jahreszeiten“ nach der Musik von Vivaldi: vier kleine, quadratische Stücke, ebenfalls nur mit dem Spachtel, in voller Emotion ausgeführt. Das ist für die Abstraktionen notwendig: die volle Emotion.

At the easel I listen to classical music. For a long time it was again and again Beethoven’s 6th Symphony — the Pastoral. One day I wondered whether one could paint music, especially since it is so onomatopoeic: the bucolic landscape, the little bells of the horses, the gathering thunderstorm that breaks.
I prepared a canvas, the finished painting almost already before my eyes, and began with the palette knife at a quick pace, listening to the music. After three hours the painting was finished, quite to my satisfaction.
Whether any painter has ever set music into a picture, I do not know — a short time later “The Four Seasons” came into being after the music of Vivaldi: four small, square pieces, also only with the palette knife, executed with full emotion. That is what is necessary for the abstractions: full emotion.
